Edward Yom/ Character Sketch/ Tue 9am - Final Draft

My Best Friend and Rival

From when I was in KIS, a middle school in Seoul Korea, I was in the same class with Tom. At that time, our school used to be relative grading, and we always fought to be the first in every class.

Tom was about 172cm tall, and his way of dressing varied quite drastically. Regardless of how cold or hot it was, whether it was snowing or raining, Tom always wore one of two attires. On days he was not playing sports, he always wore semi casual clothes consisting of jeans, and button down white shirts with long sleeves and blazers. When he was playing sports, he always wore short sleeves and sweat pants. He has big eyes, a tall nose, and a wide smile. Although these physical features alone are very positive, they somehow combined to form a face that resembles a penguin.

Tom was very popular, and was always surrounded by friends. He seemed to play hard and work hard managing to balance the best of both life styles. Tom's mom was very proud of his son and always showed off in front of her friends. The mom's who heard this were green with envy knowing Tom, and scolded their children's for not being able to be like Tom. Tom was a member of numerous debate clubs, and accumulated knowledge through hard work in all of his classes. He was very persuasive, and he seemed to carefully plan his time, so his suggestions were carried out most of the time. Depending on the work he had to do, he would say, "Let's go to the library first today since we have to work on a project, than go eat dinner, and play for two hours before we go home."

Fortunately, when I was in 7th grade, our school changed from relative grading to absolute grading. Tom and I no longer had to fight for who was first in class, and since we always competed to be the best, both of us knew what each other was capable of. With the barrier of grades out of the way, it was easier for us to bond. We not only studied together, but we also ate together, and played sports, and computer games together. As time passed, we were more loyal to each other. On nights where we had to stay up all night studying for a test, or completing an assignment, we waited for the other person to finish before we slept, even when one of us already completed the designated task.

Tom is a very kind person who is caring of other people, manages his time well, and is a great friend and a role model that I hope to surpass someday. Although Tom is now attending UCLA, and I am attending HUFS, to this day we keep in contact, and meet during summer vacation and winter vacation. We still have common interests, and pursue those interest consisting of playing computer games, eating food, and talking about problems that we encounter, wether is be academic or social.
